Principles and Practices of Foot Care

Description
Students will gain knowledge in the anatomy, structure and function of the nail, foot and skin, how to identify common nail and skin pathology, as well as structural pathology of the foot and related intervention. Students will also be introduced to the common instruments used in foot care and how to care for them, utilizing Public Health Agency of Canada guidelines. Skills will include completing a foot assessment and developing an individualized plan of care. The course includes a one day lab where practice and demonstration of foot care, nail cutting, and basic padding techniques will be performed on a lab partner. This course enables the participant to perform foot care in a supervised environment.

Credit Related Information:
The Health and Community Studies Department is fulfilling requests from the health industry to deliver a course in Foot Care. This is an industry standard credit course and has a specific time frame, defined and measurable outcomes, assessments, grade scheme, with a qualified Registered Nurse as course instructor.

Prerequisites:
Must be a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.

Text:
The following resource will be part of the course and will be provided the first day. (included in the price of tuition) Tremble,S. (2015). Nursing Foot Care 8 th ed. , Duncan, B.C. Canada. Students are required to pick up a course manual (included in price of tuition) prior to course start to become familiar with the introductory content. Course manual will be available in admissions when tuition payment is made.

Supplies Needed:
A basic set of foot care instruments will be provided to each participant upon arrival to the course and will become the property of the student when they leave the course. Cost is included in the tuition.

Notes:
Students will be required to write a multiple choice exam and pass the lab component of the course, to receive an Industry Based Certificate. During the course each student will bring a healthy adult volunteer to one lab session for foot care lab practice. To perform basic foot care independently, further supervision in the field will be required until students have adequate experience to perform foot care independently, according to their professional standard competencies. Further instructions will be provided on the first day of the course.
